We’ve added a few more ways to help your posts stand out: customizable post URLs and the ability to upload any image as a social preview.
To edit your post’s URL, click on “Settings” from the post’s editor. Along with custom domains, this means you can now make your post URLs look exactly as you’d like.
Your social preview image is what gets displayed on social media (such as Twitter or Facebook) when someone shares your post. You can now add any image you’d like, not just one that’s already in your post.
You can upload a custom image from your post’s Settings page. Click “Upload new” under your current social image to add a new one.

very nice, will there be a redirect if you change it later? Or does that mess up the seo too much?
We don't have automatic redirects from an old URL to a new one, so if you change the slug after publication it will break links. We warn you if you're about to do that, though.
So happy about this!
Fantastic changes. I had toyed with the idea of building a website so I could have more customization capability but now I absolutely won’t have to. Yay! Thanks.
Like these changes - just got the new domain working - newsletter.butwhatfor.com - and now you are making additional positive additions. The customization on social networks formatting and pictures is huge.
Very much appreciate you continuing to focus on what your writers need. Keep it up and we appreciate you.
oooh this is very useful, thanks team!
Hi, there’s a bug: If your post doesn’t have an image and you try to upload a custom one for social previews, it doesn’t upload. You need to select the default image of your Substack before you can upload a custom one.
Hi Jatan! We've looked into this, but are unable to reproduce the issue. If you hover over the image box beforehand, an element pops up that lets you select an existing picture (including your logo), but you just need to click the "Upload new" link underneath (without using the hover). Is it possible that you're hovering over the box on your way to the link? We'll keep an eye out for similar bug reports, though!
(Also, what browser are you using?)
Hi. I have a similar bug.
In my case, for example, when I make a post on Twitter, there is no image and text. The only thing there is the substack URL.
I have social preview set up. Why is that?
I am clicking the “Upload new” link only. I just tested on another post and it seems to be working now. I’ll ping here if it doesn’t in the future, thanks for looking into it anyway!
I'm using using Safari on macOS.
New bug. Thumbnail has dropped off the Twitter post despite asset being in place before.
The social preview image does not come up on Twitter. How do I fix this? There seems to be a bug.
Your Atom feed fails verification because it uses the "itunes" XML namespace without a namespace specification. This breaks feed readers that expect to receive well-formed XML. For more technical details, see the output of the W3C's feed verification tool: https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=https%3A%2F%2Fon.substack.com%2Ffeed%2F
Please locate someone who understands the above technobabble and tell them about this problem. (Is there a better channel for reporting bugs than posting a comment here?)
Love this!
Yay!
Thanks for rolling out new changes - what else is in the pipeline? 😉
vert nice.
Outstanding!
